You will be met at the Civitavecchia port by our private English-speaking guide and driver for your 90 minute drive to Rome. Along the way your guide will give you information on the sites you will visit during your exciting day in the Eternal City. The first stop will be Ostia Antica. The excavations cover a vast area, and a visit to the excavations shows how public and private life was lived in a Roman town. We explore the Theatre of Augustus, the Baths of the Forum, the Baths of Neptune, the "horrea" (warehouses for the storage of goods), the Senate House, the Capitol, the Temple of Rome and Augustus, the "thermopolium" (a kind of ancient-Roman bar), the House of the Muses, the House of the Fish (clearly the home of Christians), the Macellum, the House of the Charioteers and the house-gardens.
Leaving the coast, you will drive to the centre of Rome. Where you will enjoy a panoramic city tour you will be awed by the view of the ancient Imperial Palaces atop the Palatine Hill overlooking the Circus Maximum, to view the famous “Coliseum”, the Arch of Constantine, the astounding "Wedding Cake" Monument to Victor Emmanuel in Piazza Venezia. Back on foot to visit the classic monuments of Rome: the guide will take you on a pleasant stroll through the historical centre, where you can admire the Trevi Fountain, La Colonna di Marco Aurelio, the Palazzo di Montecitorio (designed by Bernini), the Pantheon (visit inside), Palazzo Madama seat of the senate and Piazza Navona. Your driver will transfer you back to the Civitavecchia port and your cruise ship.
