What to do in Capri

capri

Is there anything as glamorous as Capri? Since the Roman times this beautiful island has attracted many rich and famous, artists, writers and celebrities. Despite the island’s small size there are many things to see and do on a  Capri day tour or during a longer stay.

See Capri from the sea

So what to do in Capri?  Well you can take an organised 2-hour boat tour or, if you have more time, hire a private boat. That way you can visit island’s sea coves (the Grotta Verde, Grotta Bianca, Grotta di Matromania, Grotta Azzurra). The waters around Capri become quite busy during high season (July-August) but if you leave early in the morning you might have a cove all to yourselves.

Escape the crowds

In the town of Anacapri enjoy the rural landscape while strolling down Via Migliera. Vineyards, wooded areas with just a few people around. At the end of the road, from the spectacular Belvedere del Tuono you can enjoy the best panorama on Capri. Other excellent walks on the island (with more people around though) are Pizzolungo that brings you to the Grotta di Matromania, and Sentiero dei Fortini.

Stunning views

Watch a sunset at the lighthouse

Capri’s lighthouse at Punta Carena is the second tallest in Italy. The locals will tell you that it is the best place on the island to watch the sun set down and see the daylight fade. There is also a free beach there and a snack bar.

Indulge in shopping

Via Camerelle is famous for its chic boutiques and elegant designer stores. There are also excellent artisan shops selling Capri pants loved by Grace Kelly, leather sandals and even a perfume factory that makes lovely scents from local aromatic plants (the perfume “Fiori di Capri” is to die for! It combines wild carnation and lilly-of-the-valley).

Walk the Phoenician Steps

The ancient 921 steps are one of the main Capri attractions. They were built be ancient Greeks some time the 7th and 6th century BC. For thousands of years the steps linked the port (today Marina Grande) with Anacapri. It will take you up to an hour to climb the steep steps as you will certainly want to stop a few times to swoon over the sea views (as an excuse for catching your breath!).

Gorge on excellent seafood

Capri is choke-full of excellent fish restaurants. Many of them have terraces with stunning sea vistas. Restaurant Faraglioni has been favourite with movie stars for decades. Its tasty spaghetti with sea urchin and crab are famous worldwide! La Canzone del Mare is another all-time favorite.  So as you can see what to do in Capri is a lot !!
