Where to go in Tuscany: Castello del Nero

The opulent hotel & spa Castello del Nero is one of the top places when it comes to where to go in Tuscany for those on luxury tours or a honeymoon. It offers the ultimate indulgence of the luxurious historic grandeur with all modern comforts.

Situated in the heart of the famous Chianti wine region, the castle was built in the 12th century by the noble Florentine family Del Nero that used it as their country residence and for production of olive oil and wine. Over the centuries, the castle complex and its interiors continued to grow and become more beautiful.  Each generation added something new: a private chapel was built in the 1700, the beautiful tower clock was put on the main tower, and the interiors were continuously decorated with magnificent frescoes.

The Castello and its gardens

In 2006 Castello del Nero underwent major reconstruction works and became a luxury hotel. For six years restorers worked under the supervision of the Italian Fine Art Commission to bring exquisite frescoes, vaulted ceiling, ornate fireplaces and original tiled floors back to their splendor. None of the 50 rooms and suites in the hotel are the same today but they all have stunning views over the Castello del Nero estate with its 740 acres of olive groves, vineyards and rolling Tuscan hills where wild boar, deer and pheasant roam free. Just like many centuries ago, delicious oil, wine and vegetables produced on the land around the castle are offered to the guests.

The La Torre restaurant in the castle serves typical organic Tuscan food and is known to please even the most demanding palates. The sommelier proudly tells the guests that the wine cellar is exactly in the same place where the del Nero family built it. Today it is stocked with the best wines from the vineyards around the castle and the world.

Although the castle provides the ultimate hideaway, an oasis of peace and quiet, it is only a 30-minute drive from Florence with its galleries, museums and excellent shopping.
