Cinque Terre

If you have ever had this thought what to see in Italy you should definitely not miss one of the UNESCO heritage site in Italy: the Cinque Terre is one of the Italian treasures with its colorful houses. Monterosso al mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are the 5 villages constituting the Cinque Terre.
These small typical villages are hung on cliffs, set like precious stones between a turquoise sea and a rock.It is absolutely fantastic to see all the colors given at the same time by human’s work and nature gifts.
Monterosso al mare offers the biggest beaches of the Cinque Terre. A big statue of the god of sea Poseidon-Neptune overhangs the beach. The village also has several towers. In the past there were in the village 13 towers to protect it from Barbarians and pirates. Unfortunately only 3 towers survived and one of the most famous is the Aurora Tower.
Vernazza has the only natural harbor of the 5 villages of the Cinque Terre. From Vernazza it is easy to go to all the other villages of the Cinque Terre for example by walking through the Azzurro path.
Corniglia is the only village of the Cinque Terre that does not have any direct access to the sea. The village has more agricultural products than the other villages and produces the wine you can taste when you are visiting the Cinque Terre.
Manarola has been built on the rock. The hill just on the other side of the village offers a very nice panorama of the village surrounded by the sea. The village owns a Gothic church : church of Saint Lawrence. Saint Lawrence is the Saint patron of Manarola and he is celebrated the 10th of August.
Riomaggiore offers an absolute breathtaking panorama of the Liguria coast. And if you are still wondering what to see in Italy, take the path of love (Via dell’Amore) from Riomaggiore to Manarola to enjoy the nice landscapes of the Cinque Terre, it is only a 20 minutes walk.
Several trains from Genova, Santa Margherita and Florence go to Monterosso and after the other villages. Any trip in Tuscany can also be continued with an excursion to the Cinque Terre.
Walking around in these villages, discovering their harbors and small streets is the best way to enjoy them and feel the Italian culture. The Cinque Terre also offers to Epicurean enjoyable meals and wines. Vineyards are covering hills around the villages.
